A Different War
The second World War was fought differently than previous wars. Previous wars had been fought by soldiers on the battlefield, now civilians were at the heart of the war. Cities were bombed and cities lay in ruins. Soldiers would fight in cities or what was left of them.
- Fought Globaly
- The war was fought in the sea, air, desert, beaches, jungles, cities, and inland. Soldiers fought in various climates and weather. New battle tactics and technologies sprung up. With the invention of the airplane soldiers could now bomb and incinerate entire enemy cites. They could also parachute into enemy cities. Scientists on both sides raced to develop weapons to give their soldiers the edge in battle.
- Precautions
- Many governments and nations took precautions before bombings and attacks. Government handed out gas masks in case of gas attack. Cities would be blacked out so bombers couldn't find targets. People would dig small bunkers in their backyards to take cover in.
War Production
The U.S. and U.S.S.R. were the leading industrial countries. They had a stock of raw materials and supplies. Their factory production were undisturbed because they were out of reach of bombers. Both countries had millions of workers willing to help the war cause and for the first time woman could hold jobs and do the same labor as men. World War 2 brought the United States out of the Great Depression. Because of this both nations became the 2 world superpowers and the icons for Communism and Democracy for years to come.
